WAS IT A METEOR
Oshkosh Daily Northwestern January 29, 1879
A phenomenon appears to have happened Monday night, probably after midnight, which, though it occasioned trifling remark the next morning, has since been magnified into quiet a mystery by the combined testimony of many who witnessed the same occurrence. Several persons in this city have made the statement that some time in the night a rolling, jarring noise was heard which even startled them out of bed, and at the same time the heavens were lit up as bright as day, for the space of about half a minute, with a strange illumination. In corroboration of the statements in this city comes the report from Neenah that the shock was very distinct in that section and to the north. On the other hand the Fond du Lac paper comes with an account of a meteoric phenomenon witnessed in that city, and gives the corner of the street at which the meteor apparently dropped and exploded. This ???? of testimony, coming simultaneously from such different sources, would indicate that a meteoric display of some kind or a phenomenon of some nature took place on that night, which both illuminated the atmosphere and jarred the earth.
