EARTHQUAKE
Oshkosh Daily Northwestern January 29, 1879

Yesterday morning, about three o'clock, a large number of our people were awakened by a noise and shock like a violent meeting of heavy objects. Some started from their slumber in great alarm and grasped their revolvers thinking it was burglars trying to break open doors, others thought it might be thunder and gazed into the heavens for clouds, but seeing a clear sky were forced to find another solution of the mystery; several people saw a bright flash of light leaping heavenward simultaneously with the shock. The shock was noticed in Menasha and as far north as Appleton, and it has caused considerable excitement and formed the principal topic of conversation since it happened, all agreeing that we had a small earthquake; and as the people of this city desire no further experience of the kind they pass it on to Oshkosh and say "Shake."
