Racine Journal Times March 11, 1929 page 1 PASSES ON {picture} Adam H. Harcus above, one of the city's most prominent builders, died at St. Luke's Hospital on Sunday. ADAM H. HARCUS CALLED BY DEATH-Building Contractor and Long Time Resident of City Passes Away. MASONIC SERVICES Adam H. Harcus aged 77 years, one of Racine's most prominent builders, died early Sunday morning at St. Luke's Hospital. He was a native of Scotland and was born Jan. 24, 1852. At the age of 18 he came to this city, and for quite a number of years he was in the employ of the Thomas Driver Manufacturing company. He also worked in the factory of the Case T. M. company for several years.

It has always been his desire to branch out into a buisness of his own, and better fitted himself for the responsibilities that go with the profession of a builder as construction engineer for Armour & Co., Chicago. Mr. Harcus continued to make his home at 822 Fourteenth street, this city, during the time he held that position, and it was there he still made his home at the time of his death.

He resigned his position with Armour & Co., and returned to this city to actively engage in the work of building contractor. One of the jobs that he undertook and carried out to successful completion was the main post office building in Monument square. He also built the main public library and several large factory additions, including those of the Elsendrath Tanning company and the Hamilton-Beach company. Many residences in all sections of the city were produced by Mr. Harcus and his organization of artisans.

He was prominent in Masonic circles, being pastmaster of Racine Lodge, No.18, F. & A. M.; member of Orient Chapter, No.12, R. A. M.; Member of Racine council, No.5, R. & S. M., and a member of Racine Commandary, No.__ (can't read, possibly 7) K. T.

Surviving are his widow and three children, Mrs. A. A. Andersen, Harold and John Harcus; three grandchildren, all of this city; two brothers, Thomas and Sam Harcus; Three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Kent and Mrs. Thomas Rousey of Scotland, and Mrs. Elsworth Gardiner of Somers. The funeral will take place Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from Masonic Temple, with burial in Mound cemetery.

[note from submitter: There have been a few library buildings over the years, curious as to which one was being reffered to, I went to the Racine Historical Museum in search of the answer. I found the following "In January 1902 a site at Main and Seventh Streets was purchased. John Mauran, a St. Louis architect, was hired and a contract was let to the A. H. Harcus Company for $41,000...."
LAUGH OUT LOUD, I was sitting in the very building I had come to search for, now known as the Racine Historical Museum]
